During the Month of March, a Figurative Language Thematic Unit was being given to the seventh graders of the Juan Ponce de Leon Bilingual School. This Unit required the students to go one step further from the expectation of identifying Figurative Language Techniques, into reaching the highest level of creating their own examples. This is when student’s production certified that they mastered the creation of Figurative Language techniques and that they were engaged in knowing more about creative writing. Moved by the students need and interest of experiencing creative writing, Mrs. Morales and Mrs. De Jesus designed an event that would help the students explore writing to the highest potential.
The event pretends to give the students a day in which they can have autonomy of the English language, involve values and integrate the community. The Juan Ponce de Leon Bilingual School has never promoted creative writing among the students, so at the time of explaining the project that we intended to accomplish, the English teachers and students were interested. This year, the English week did not take place and there were no activities done to enhance the usage of the English Language outside the classroom environment. We have organized a day in which students can develop their language art skills and also show the community what they are capable of creating. There will be no limitations towards the ways that this activity can influence the student’s creativity and involvement. We want this activity to be a legacy in the school that can socially, instructionally and creatively transform the school community.
